[livejournal.com profile] alazysod posted about visiting the Parents Television Council website and I just had to check it out for myself.

I can understand not wanting your children to see certain shows but when you get up on your high horse and talk about shows being disgusting and immoral that pisses me off!

These are from their Worst of the Week section:

About the episode "Skin Deep"
In blatant imitation of the sex-and-gore cesspool Nip/Tuck shown on Fox’s cable cousin FX, this episode of House revels in its depictions of incest, teenage promiscuity, physical abnormality and warped psychology. No longer content to contaminate Sunday nights, Fox is busily spreading its filth to weeknights – during the prime hours of viewing by children.

Fox is contaminating the whole week! The filth will spread to every single night, no one will be safe! The horror, the horror!

About the episode "Our Sons and Daughters"
But CBS crossed a line by depicting teens in such sexually provocative situations. What's even more disturbing is that CBS chose the holiday season to re-air this most graphic and gross episode of debauchery.

When is the right time to show a teenage orgy? Maybe around Halloween, it is full of satanism and witchcraft after all.

About the episode "Identity"
Law and Order: Special Victim's Unit has once again chosen the exploitative theme of child sex crimes to glue audiences to the TV set.

Umm do you not understand the concept of the show?

This fall, the Fox network has once again renewed its commitment to bringing the most violent, unoriginal and family-unfriendly of programming into people’s homes. So far, Prison Break promises to be a violent look at fictitious prison life. In the episode titled “Cell Test,” viewers got a disturbing view of an inmate being tortured, a woman’s violent abduction, and glimpse into the mind of a sociopath. With such content as this, it is likely that it will not be the last time Prison Break is Worst of the Week.

It's a show about prison, what the fuck do you expect?! You think everyone should be nice and peaceful?!

Here are their general overview of some of my favorite shows:

Without a Trace-
This series was a pleasant surprise in the genre of police investigation dramas because the first season contained very little sex, language, or violence. However, in the 2003-2004 season, the series has dramatically increased the sexual situations and violent content. Sexual deviance has appeared in the forms of teenaged girls having sex with adult men, sex addiction, and a graphically depicted teen orgy. Violence is also more dramatic this year. Several point blank shootings were shown in graphic detail, as well as kidnappings involving torture. The language has remained relatively tame, but the increase in sex and violence has raised this show to a red light rating. Adults should be strongly cautioned about their children seeing this series, which airs regularly at 10:00 p.m. EST, but reruns occasionally in earlier timeslots.

Without a Trace you're on notice!

Law & Order: Criminal Intent-
Since Criminal Intent will often show the actual crime being committed—not just the aftermath—scenes of violence are much more frequent and graphic. Sexual content is prevalent in the series, and graphic sexual discussions do occur. Harsh language is also frequent, including words such as “bitch” and “piss.”

Piss? Have they said that on Criminal Intent? I find that a strange word to single out.

Law & Order: SVU-
Due to the very nature of the show, nearly every episode of Special Victims Unit contains a great deal of sexual dialogue or situations. Though the actual crimes are rarely depicted, the descriptions of these violent crimes can often be intense, as are the victims’ reactions. During one episode this season, the bodies of several strangled women were shown with surprising frankness. Another episode showed the detectives busting into a bedroom, interrupting a couple having sex. Foul language has included words such as “bitch” and “bastard.”

Children must never hear about sex!

Law & Order-
The show very rarely delves into the personal lives of the principal characters. Although actual violence is not shown, its consequences (e.g., bloody corpses) frequently are. The show's violent subject matter as well as its foul language (such as “bastard,” “piss,” and “bitch”) and sexual content (adulterous affairs often are motives for the crimes) make Law & Order a questionable viewing choice for children.

Adultery! Oh noes!!!

House-
House is not particularly violent, although the images of medical treatments or processes that occur inside the human body can be distressing for young viewers. As far as sexual content, some storylines have been of an adult nature. For example, in one episode a young man falls ill during sex, and explicit dialogue about the possibilities of dying as a result of kinky sex followed. In one episode, an elderly woman starts showing the recurrent symptoms of syphilis, which involve an abnormally increased libido. Language in this series is rated red, and mostly includes profanities such as “ass,” “son of a bitch,” “bastard,” and “screw.”
House is not recommended for children of any age.

Clearly House is a filthy smutfest!

CSI: New York-
The series has a red rating for sex because of the frequent references to deviant sexual situations. In the pilot episode, the investigators reference oral sex when they discuss red makeup found in the genital region of a man. Another episode features parties where people eat sushi off of naked models. The program merits a red light rating for violence. The show includes constant depictions of death and autopsy, and flashbacks recounting the way people were shot, stabbed, or raped. Some deaths are even scary or disturbing. In one episode, a man killed several women hostages by drugging them and leaving them tied to a table. The language isn’t too extreme, but there are uses of “damn,” “ass,” and “bitch.”
Due to all the grisly violence and sexual situations, C.S.I.: New York is not recommended for children of any age.

Oral sex is deviant? Are you kidding me?! What is this the 50's?

Prison Break-
As can be anticipated for a show set in prison, violence is a major thematic element. At times, the violence depicted can be quite graphic and disturbing for younger viewers. In one episode, John Abruzzi cuts off two of Michael’s toes with hedge clippers when Michael withholds information from him. In another episode the entire inmate population begins to riot. The prisoners beat and stab the correctional officers and destroy the inside of the prison. Because of these graphic situations, violence is rated red for this series. Language and sex are both rated yellow for this series. “Hell” and “Damn” are used frequently and one character, “T-Bag,” is known for his homosexual tendencies.
Due to Prison Break’s graphic depictions of violence, this show is not recommended for children of any age.

I find the fact that they say having a character with "homosexual tendencies" is a reason not to let kids watch a show very offensive!

I browsed some other shows too. They say that Veronica Mars has "sex-crazed teenagers".

About America's Funniest Home Videos they say: Due to the questionable taste of some of the videos, this program in not appropriate for family viewing. (OMG are you kidding me? America's Funniest Home Videos?!)

About The Book of Daniel (which isn't even on anymore) they say: The appalling treatment of religion in this series combined with its obsession with sex and explicit dialogue, “The Book of Daniel” is not recommended for families or viewers under 18.

Here's their thoughts on The Simpsons: However, it has been known to feature objectionable content especially in the categories of sex and religion. For instance, in the premier episode of the ’05 season, Homer allows the mafia to film a pornographic movie in the Simpson home. There are no graphic depictions of sex in the scene, but there is talk of lesbian pornography. The Simpsons is rated yellow for language due to its frequent use of the words “damn,” “hell,” and “crap.”

If the site was just about saying "Hey there's a show we think you might not want your kids to watch" that would be fine. But they have all these petitions and shit about censoring TV and taking indecent programming of the air. Look if you don't want to watch it, fine. If you don't want your kids to watch it, stop them. Don't try to get every show you don't like thrown off the air!
