Out of all of your favorite books, pick just one you'd recommend everyone read. As a bonus: why did you pick that one?

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters! It has been described as "Dickens with lesbians". It is a fantabulous book! It's a love story between two women set in Victorian London. One woman, Sue, is in on a plot with a con man to pose as a maid to a rich young woman, Maude, who the man plans to marry, steal her money, and send to the madhouse. But Sue and Maude fall in love. I can't even come up with the words to explain how great this book is.

Here's an excerpt from the book:
"I felt that thread that had come between us, tugging, tugging at my heart - so hard, it hurt me. A hundred times I almost rose, almost went in to her; a hundred times I thought, Go to her! Why are you waiting? Go back to her side! But every time, I thought of what would happen if I did. I knew that I couldn't lie beside her, without wanting to touch her. I couldn't have felt her breath upon my mouth, without wanting to kiss her. And I couldn't have kissed her, without wanting to save her."
